Pains and Acupuncture

By: Dr.Zhang

Why not just try acupuncture when you get pains?

When you get acute pains you should cure it quickly because it is not a natural feeling your body wants and it not only bothers you physically but also mentally. If the problem is an acute pain, I recommend you find acupuncture treatment fast because

1. Acupuncture can quickly cure the pain.
2. It takes a shorter amount of time to restore to your regular activities.
3. After acupuncture treatment, you don¡¯t need maintenance treatment.
4. And you don¡¯t want it to develop into chronic pain.

You should consult with an experienced acupuncturist when you feel acute pain. They will give you an assessment. If the pain only involves muscles or tendonitis, it will just take a few treatments to cure.

Many of you might have this experience. When acute pain came, you visited your GP who probably told you it¡¯s muscle or tendonitis pain. He gave you medication, told you to exercise or see a therapist. If you chose to exercise or medication, other therapies or just letting it recover on its own and after 2 weeks there is not much improvement. You need to quickly seek out acupuncture. At this time you still wouldn¡¯t have lost the best acupuncture treatment time. If it has already been a month and it has barely improved, I highly recommend acupuncture immediately. You still have the chance to recover quickly. Otherwise the pain will develop into chronic pain.

The earlier you seek out acupuncture treatment, the more effective each treatment will be. Acupuncture therapy for pain management is one the best know uses of acupuncture therapy in the West.

Acupuncture is effective for chronic pains as well. By definition, acute pain comes on suddenly and lasts for a limited time, whereas chronic pain persists. Chronic pains aren¡¯t going to heal really fast like acute pains because you¡¯ve already missed the best acupuncture treatment time. The pain has already been active for a long time so it is more difficult for it to heal. Along with discomfort, chronic pain can cause depression and anger, and it can interfere with your daily activities. Another reason to seek acupuncture treatment is if you are experiencing intolerable side effect from medications or fears of becoming addicted to pain medications.

The main question many of my patients ask is ¡°how many treatments will it take?¡± Pain varies from person to person, recovery varies too. Treatment is individualized and the recovery also depends on how well you cooperate with your acupuncturist. There are also some patients who suffer pains for a long time and tried many therapies and said that acupuncture is their last hope. But they expect to see big improvements in 2-3 acupuncture treatments, and in 5-6 treatments, they¡¯ll be cured.

Acupuncture is effective for chronic pain. But you have to give your acupuncturist time and actively co-operate with the treatment. If you see improvement in the first 12 treatments, you should continue. Besides acupuncture, experienced acupuncturist will also have other therapies to support the acupuncture treatment such as cupping, herbal medicine, Tui-Na massage etc.

Acupuncture originated from ancient China but to many in the West is still unfamiliar, or is sceptical about acupuncture therapy. The ancient theory of Yin and Yang is new to many, it doesn¡¯t mean it¡¯s not working, just mean that we don¡¯t yet know how it works. Studies carried by main stream doctors in the West are showing that acupuncture is effective for many chronic pain conditions. One possibility is that the needles stimulate the release of endorphins and opioids, the body¡¯s natural painkillers. History proves that acupuncture is very effective to heal pain naturally.

At Dr.Zhang¡¯s website www.acupunctureherbs.ca there are many cases where acute pains were cured in one treatment. There are also cases where people who have tried a countless number of therapies and their pain developed into chronic pain. They all regret that they didn¡¯t select acupuncture as their first treatment choice.

The reason Dr.Zhang wrote this article is to educate people about which treatment is the most effective for acute and chronic pains and also the fastest treatment that will help you to go back to your normal everyday activities.
